How to update Better Ruler to version 7

The version 7 introduces a new license validation system and your existing default templates will need to be recreated.

Step 1: Install the License Manager

The ASCENDO License Manager validates your product licenses and must be installed before using any ASCENDO products.

Note: If you’ve already installed the License Manager, skip to Step 2.

Otherwise, follow these instructions to install it.

Step 2: Save your Default Template

You’ll need to recreate your default template after installing version 7.

  1. Draw a Ruler with rectangle highlight drawing tool on your chart
  2. Open its properties window
  3. Take clear screenshots of all your current default parameters
  4. Save these screenshots in an easily accessible folder
  5. Draw a Ruler with line highlight drawing tool on your chart
  6. Open its properties window
  7. Take clear screenshots of all your current default parameters
  8. Save these screenshots in an easily accessible folder

These screenshots will help you quickly configure version 7 with your preferred settings.

Step 3: Save your Hot Key

You’ll need to recreate the hot key (keyboard shortcut) for the Price Marker after the upgrade.

  1. Open the NinjaTrader Control Center window
  2. Select Tools → Hot Keys → Chart
  3. Locate the hot key for the Ruler with rectangle highlight and Ruler with line highlight
  4. Take a screenshot of the hot keys configuration
  5. Save this screenshot alongside your template screenshots

Step 4: Remove all existing Ruler drawings

To avoid errors after the upgrade, remove all existing drawings from your charts before upgrading.

  1. Remove all Ruler with rectangle highlight and Ruler with line highlight drawings from your charts
  2. Create a new workspace in NinjaTrader
  3. Save this clean workspace

Note: If you skip this step, you may see the following errors in the NinjaTrader log window:

Failed to restore Drawing Tool ‘NinjaTrader.NinjaScript.DrawingTools.ASCENDO.Ruler[Rectangle or Line]’. Most likely (a) the implementation changed or (b) one or more properties have been renamed or removed or (c) the custom assembly which implements this Drawing Tool no longer is there.

Step 5: Install the new version

  1. Open the NinjaTrader Control Center window
  2. Select Tools → Import → NinjaScript Add-On…
  3. In the Import File Explorer window, navigate to where you saved the product zip file
  4. Select the product zip file and click Open
  5. Follow any on-screen prompts to complete the installation
  6. Restart NinjaTrader if required

Step 6: Recreate your Hot Keys

  1. Open the NinjaTrader Control Center window
  2. Select Tools → Hot Keys → Chart
  3. Using the screenshot from Step 2, recreate the hot keys configuration
  4. Verify the hot keys works as expected

Step 7: Recreate your Default Templates

  1. Draw a new Ruler with rectangle highlight drawing tool
  2. Open its properties window
  3. Using the screenshots from Step 2, configure the tool with your preferred default parameters
  4. Save as the Default Template
  5. Repeat the above steps for Ruler with line highlight
